In-Demand Data Skills in Australia

The most frequently requested skills across Australian data job listings, ranked by mention count. Track which tools and technologies are trending for Data Analyst, Data Engineer, Data Scientist, ML Engineer, and AI Engineer roles.

How skills are counted

This page ranks a fixed list of thirty tracked tools and technologies by how many active Australian data listings mention each one. A skill is counted once per listing regardless of how many times it appears in the ad text, so the ranking reflects how many employers are asking for something rather than how emphatically any one of them asked.

The list is deliberately fixed rather than extracted automatically from ad text. That keeps the month-to-month comparison meaningful — a ranking built from whatever keywords happened to appear would shift as much from changes in how ads are written as from changes in what employers want.

Mention count is not the same as importance

The most-mentioned skills are not automatically the most valuable ones to learn next. SQL sits near the top precisely because it is assumed everywhere, which also means it differentiates you from very few other candidates. A tool appearing in a smaller share of ads can be worth more to acquire if the roles asking for it are the ones you want and few applicants have it.

Cloud platforms are worth reading carefully for the same reason. An ad mentioning AWS or Azure is usually asking for a handful of specific services on that platform rather than broad platform expertise, so the underlying requirement is narrower than the headline count suggests. The individual skill pages break down which roles each tool actually appears alongside.
