What the monthly view measures
This page tracks how many data roles were advertised in Australia each month, broken down by role family. It counts listings, not hires — an employer posting one ad and interviewing thirty people registers once, and a role advertised in two places may register twice. What it is good for is direction and relative movement: whether demand for Data Engineers is rising faster than for Data Analysts, and whether the overall market is expanding or contracting.
A listing is treated as active while it is inside a thirty-day refresh window and has been seen in the source feed within the last seven days. Ads that vanish from the feed for longer than that are marked as expired rather than being silently dropped, which is why the counts here are more stable than a raw scrape of whatever is visible on a job board on any given day.
Reading month-to-month movement
Australian hiring has a pronounced annual rhythm, and a lot of apparent trend is really seasonality. Listing volume falls away through December and January, recovers sharply from February, and moves again around the end of the financial year in June as new budgets are released. A month-on-month drop in December says very little about the underlying market; the same drop in March would be worth paying attention to.
The more reliable read is year-on-year for the same month, or the direction of three or four consecutive months. Single-month movements in the smaller role families are especially noisy — when a category is advertising modest volumes nationally, a handful of listings from one large employer can swing the percentage change substantially without anything having changed in the market.
